Spot the Heart Competition - Winner Review

Back in February we had our Valentine’s Day Spot the Heart competition to win a holiday. Here’s what the lucky winner thought of their trip.

Finally the day of our holiday had arrived, I was the very lucky and excited winner of the Spot the Heart Valentines Competition, and we had won a week away at an Al Fresco Holidays parc of our choice, we decided on Cote De Nacre, St. Aubin-Sur-Mer in Normandy, France.

We left very early for Portsmouth, this worked out well as our daughter Sasha 4 and her brother Finbar 2 went straight back to sleep in the car. We caught the ferry at 8.15am to Caen, it was a beautiful sunny morning and we sat on deck and watched as England disappeared into the background. Although the crossing was 6 hours and we had three young children with us, it flew by thanks to the excellent facilities and entertainment on board and was actually really enjoyable.

On arrival in France it took us about 20 minutes to get to the Cote De Nacre Parc, and we all commented on how pretty St.Aubin Sur Mer and the drive to it was, lots of quaint villages and rolling fields. Chloe the Al Fresco Rep took us straight to our Vivaldi Mobile home, it was really spacious with 3 bedrooms and had everything and more than we could have needed. We were also able to borrow board games and books and the reps were always about if we needed them for anything during the week.

At this point we did have a slight nightmare as our daughter started coming out in Chicken Pox spots, sadly this curtailed her trips to the pool and childrens activities of which there were lots, we also tended to have Bar-B-Ques in the evening as we didn’t want to scare anyone in restaurants with all her spots!!!!!

My oldest son Callum 9 has fallen in love with trips to the Boulangerie / Patisserie and says he has never tasted or seen anything so good. My husband also did daily morning trips to the on site shop for delicious fresh Croissants and baguettes for breakfast, lets not forget the amazing cheeses and wines we indulged in too!  We were blessed with fantastic weather for our stay and the on site swimming pools / slides and rivers were brilliant! The various bouncy castles were great too.

Our favourite place which we visited several times was the beach of Arromanche / Gold Beach which had been highly recommended to me when I booked with Becky at Thomson Al Fresco as she had been previously.  About 20 mins drive away, it is one of the D-Day beaches with a museum overlooking the beach, and it is also absolutely beautiful, powdery sand and a very gentle slope so really safe for our toddlers to paddle.  It was also practically empty so we felt like we had it to ourselves.  To be honest we visited lots of beaches along the coast from Ouistreham to Arromanche and they were all fantastic, the sandy beach at St.Aubin Sur Mer also has a great promenade to walk along where the children discovered you could buy some pretty amazing ice creams, restaurants overlooking the beach were plentiful too, moules and frites seemed to be the popular choice.

We also visited Bayeux Cathedral which was breathtaking and dates back to 1050, and Bayeux British War Cemetery which was very moving.  Over the week I have learnt so much more than I knew previously about D-Day and WW2, it was really educational for my son Callum who will be covering this next year at school.

All too soon it was time to catch our ferry back to England, we will definitely be returning as it is such a lovely and unspoilt place, rich in history and culinary delights.

Thank you very much Al Fresco Holidays, we had a ball!
