A Camping Dream for Children – Duinrell - Al Fresco Holidays

With two 5-year olds, when organising our Thomson Al Fresco holiday, we decided to opt for the longer Hull-Rotterdam crossing. We thought this would be much easier than the car journeys from Manchester to Dover, and then Calais up to Wassenaar in Holland and would allow us the all important “quality” time to spend with the children. We chose right! The ferry was fantastic. With a live band, the children danced away their excitement allowing them to have a great night’s sleep. The food was excellent, with a huge choice both for the evening meal and for breakfast. Thankfully, we seemed to have left the rain behind in Hull. Greeted by the sun in Rotterdam and armed with our route-map, which was very easy to follow, we headed for the Duinrell campsite. We arrived onsite mid-morning.

Our instructions were that our holiday home would be available from 4pm, but we thought we would try to find our reps anyway. We knew we would be able to use the campsite facilities even though we were a few hours early. Luckily, our luxury mobile-home had been vacated the previous day, and our super-efficient reps had already prepared it, so it was fine for us to go in earlier. Later in the week they were explaining to us that sometimes, if they are ready, they are happy to show guests in early; but of course, when they are very busy, we would need to be patient and use the time until 4pm, to go exploring the campsite, use the pool etc, leaving the reps to continue their cleaning.

The mobile, a Vivaldi, was very impressive, very roomy and the welcome-pack drinks were much appreciated! The reps went through the information folder provided, showing us the safety features (smoke alarm, carbon monoxide detector…), how to use the cooker, the departure instructions etc. When we studied the folder later that night, we could see it contained all the information we might require, opening times of the swimming pool etc., and also suggested local places to visit, such as The Hague (if only we could persuade our little ones to leave our amusement-park home!).

We dropped our bags and decided to go and investigate. It was now about 11am. The park is amazing! Needless to say it was 6pm when we arrived back at the mobile (and this was only to get ready to go out to the children’s disco that evening). The children finally decided they were tired around 10pm. The theme park is wonderful with such a variety of rides to suit all ages. Every time I see them, my grandchildren ask if they can go back. What are grandmas for? The Tiki pool is well worth the 3.50€ entrance fee with so many water rides for older children, and slides and play pool for the smaller ones. 11 water slides in total! The town of Wassenaar is only a short walk away from the parc, with shops and restaurants.

We had a fantastic time and we’ll certainly go back again. I would recommend this parc to all my family and friends. Well…… I already have!
